Let not the gates

This is, the gates were not to be opened till sun-rise, and to be shut at sun-set; which is still the custom in many cities of the East. If a traveller arrives after sun-set, he finds the gates shut, and on no consideration will they open them till morning.

The variation between [Mikmac (Ezra 2:27, Neh. 7:31) (smkm)] Michmash, and [Mikmac (Ezra 2:27, Neh. 7:31) (smkm)] Michmas, arises from the mutation of [ShÓyn] sheen, and [ƒ‚mek] samech; though several MSS. have the former reading here also.

Shalmai

In the parallel passage not only the Keri and Septuagint, but many of Dr. Kennicott's MSS. read Shalmai, as here. A more extensive collation of MSS. would doubtless tend still more to harmonize both the names and numbers.

This variation only exists in the translation; the original being uniformly PasÎah.

Verse 52

The children of Besai, the children of Meunim, the children of Nephishesim,

Meunim

The first of these variations is attributable to the translation, the original being uniformly, [M@`uwniy (ynw(m)] Me˚nim; and the latter arises from the mutation of, [V‚v] wav, and, [YÙwd] yood, and insertion of, [ShÓyn] sheen, though in the parallel passage the Kethiv is [N@phiyciym (eysypn)] Nephisim; and here the Keri and many MSS. have [N@phuwsh@ciym (eys#wpn)] Nephishesim.

Ezra 2:50

Verse 59

The children of Shephatiah, the children of Hattil, the children of Pochereth of Zebaim, the children of Amon.

Ezra 2:58

And these were they which went up also from Telmelah, Telharesha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer: but they could not shew their father's house, nor their seed, whether they were of Israel.

Tel-haresha

The first of these variations only exists in the translation; the original being uniformly [Tel Charsha' ()#rx lt)] Tel-harsha: the latter simply arises from the insertion of a [V‚v] wav; being written ['Addan (add))] Addan, in the parallel passage, and ['Addown (awdd))] Addon, here.
