Geneva Bible Notes (1560): Romans 3

1 ! Hauing granted some prerogatiue to the Jewes, because Gods fre and stable promes,

4 a That thou maist be declared juste and thy goodnes and trueth in performing thy promises may appeare, when man ether of curiositie or arrogancie wolde judge they workes.

5 c Whose carnal wisdome wil not obey the wil of God.

5 b He sheweth how the wicked do reason against God.

9 d Lest the Jewes shulde be puffed vp in that he preferred them to the Gentiles, he sheweth that this their preferment standeth onely in the mercie of God, for asmuche as bothe Jewe and Gentil through sinne are subject to Gods wrath, that they might bothe be made equal in Christ.

10 ! He proueth by the Scriptures, bothe Jewes and Gentiles to be sinners.

19 g The Law doeth not make vs giltie, but doeth declare that we are gilitie before God & deserue condemnation.

19 f That is, the olde testament.

20 h He meaneth the Law ether written or vnwriten which commandeth or forbiddeth any thing, whose workes can not justifie because we can not performe them.

21 ! And to be justified by grace through faith, & not by workes.

23 i The worde signifieth them which are left behinde in the race and are not able to runne to the marke, that is to euerlasting life, which here is called the glorie of God.

27 l The Law of faith is the Gospel which offreth saluation with condition (if thou beleuest) which condition also Christ frely giueth to vs. So the condition of the Law is (if thou doest all these things) the which onely Christ hathe fulfilled for vs.

30 m Meaning, that they are all justified by one meanes, & if they wil haue anie difference, it onely standeth in wordes: for in effect there is none.

31 n The doctrine of faith is the ornament of the Law: for it embraceth Christ, who by his death hathe satisfied the Law: so that the Law which colde not bring vs to saluation by reason of our owne corruption is now made effectual to vs by Christ Jesus.
