Geneva Bible Notes (1560): Luke 1

2 a Meaning, the Apostles with whome he was conuersant.

2 b Or of the thing: and it may be referred ether to Christ or to the Gospel and hereby is ment that they were the ministers of Christ who is called the worde: or ministers of that worde that is to sy, of the Gospel: & this commendeth the autoritie of his doctrine, seing he receiued it of the Apostle.

5 c The sonne of Antipater.

5 e By her father: for by her mothers line she was of the house of Dauid.

6 f This perfection of justice is judged by the frutes and outwarde appearance, and not by the cause: which onely cometh of Gods fre mercie through Christ.

6 g The Greke worde signifieth, justifications, whereby is ment the outwarde obseruation of the cermonies is commanded by God.

9 h That is, the euening & morning sacrifice according to the Law.

9 i The Temple was deuided into thre partes: the first was the bodie of the Temple called Atrium, where the people was: the second called Sanctum, where the Priests and Leuites were: and the third Sanctum Sanctorum, into the which the hie Priest entred once a yere to sacrifice.

11 ! The Angel sheweth him of the natiuitie of John Baptist.

15 l The worde signifieth all maner of drinke which maketh men dronken.

17 m As a King in his royaltie hathe one to go before him, who signifieth the King to be at hand.

17 n When Christ saieth he came to set the father against the sonne &c. he meaneth the successe which cometh of the Gospel throught the malice of men: but here he speaketh of the true end & prosperitie of the Gospel.

19 o Which signifieth, the strength or soueraintie of God.

20 p We must not measure Gods promes by our weake senses.

20 ! His incredulitie is punished.

23 q Whiles their course endured to sacrifice, they might not lie with their wiues, nor drinke anie licour that might make one drunke.

25 r For the barren women enjoyed not the promes which God made to them that were maried, to haue yssue: but principally they were depriued of that promes which God made to Abraham, that he wolde increase his sede.

30 s Not for her merites: but onely throught Gods fre mercie, who loued vs when we were sinners, that whosoeuer rejoyceth, shulde rejoyce in the Lord.

34 u She wolde be resolued of all doutes to the end that she might more surely embrase the promes of God.

35 y He must be pure and without sinne, which must take away the sinnes of the worlde.

35 x It shalbe a secret operation of the holie Gost.

36 z Notwithstanding that Elisabet was maried to one of the tribe of Leui, yet she was Maries cousin which was of the stocke of Dauid. For the law which forbade mariage out of their owne tribe, was onely that the tribes shulde not be ixt and confounded, which colde not be in marying with the Leuites: for they had no portion assigned vnto them.

78 r Or, branceh of a tre, meaning the Messias, who is the sunne of righteousnes which shineth from heauen.

80 t He meaneth that parte of Judea which was least inhabited where also the grosse & rude people dwelled.
